Heinz Werner Schimanko
Born February 16th, 1944
and died November 22nd, 2005 in Vienna. He was a prominent figure of the
Viennese nightlife. As owner of numerous hotels and bars, he was crowned the
unofficial Nightclub King of Vienna.
Schimanko was born poor, however attained the goal to have a lot of money and be
a prominent figure. His defining characteristics were his bald head, handle-bar
mustache and his robust figure (for which he trained hard since his teenage
years). He began his career in the service industry in 1971--even though he was
a career soldier (Jagdkommando)—for 500,000 Schillings (approximately 36,500.00
Euros) in a bar in Schwechat.
In 1975, Schimanko bought the Eden Bar in the first district, loved by those in
the trendy social circles. As a 19 year old soldier, he frequently visited the
bar and it quickly became a second home to him. In 1974 he also bought the
Moulin Rouge, however sold it later believing he could not run it seriously.
Other establishments that belonged to him were the Cafe Walfisch, Club 24, the
Schloss Bar, Eve-Bar, and the Dolce Vita. In addition to the Eden, he also
owned numerous winery real estates, the Hotel Orient, Domizil, and Hotel
Opernring. Until shortly before his death, Schimanko was forging plans for a 24
hour restaurant called Opera, following his image of „a contemporary Cafe
Landtmann for opera visitors.“
He was a member of various masonic lodges, in Munich and Leipzig, which during
interviews with ORF and in discussions he presented as modern and cosmopolitan
unions. Schimanko was married twice and had 5 children.
Through his ‚hot spot‘ bar he was a well-known component of the Viennese elite.
He died in Vienna from a heart attack. He also appeared in guest's roles in
different TV serials like Kottan Investigates and a Castle in the
Wörthersee.
